After graduating from junior high school in 1948, he studied art with his parents. In 1952, he learned from Gu Jingzhou, a contemporary purple clay magnate, and became the first disciple of Gu Jingzhou. In 1972, Xu Hantang and his brother Xu Xiutang designed a set of "fifteen silver inlaid coffee sets", which were collected by the Palace Museum. In 2014, the Education Foundation, named after Xu Hantang's donation of 10 million yuan, was officially established. In November 2017, the authorization ceremony for the production of the purple clay teapot "Palace Pot" designed by Ji Hansheng was held in Fanjia Pot Village, Yixing.
