The multipurpose fighter saw extensive combat duty during the Vietnam War, including serving as Lt. Curt Dose and Lt. Cdr. Jim McDevitt's warbird on their May 10, 1972, mission over a North Vietnamese airfield near Hanoi. During a low-level supersonic flight, the "Silver Kite 211" F-4J Phantom II — operating off the USS Constellation — scored victory when its AIM-9 Sidewinder connected and took down a MiG-21F.
