Description

The LM-49 is a Soviet four-axle motorized tram. The first prototype of this vehicle was built in 1949 at the Leningrad Carriage Works (VARZ). The abbreviation "LM" stands for "Leningradskiy Motornyy Tramvay" (Leningrad Motor Tram). These trams were used in Leningrad as well as in several other Soviet cities, such as Minsk, Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod), Novokuznetsk, and Magnitogorsk.

Residents of Leningrad nicknamed the LM-49 the "Slon" (Elephant). Typically, LM-49 trams operated in pairs, hauling an unpowered trailer car known as the LP-49. Production of the LM-49 ceased in 1960, when it was replaced by the next model, the LM-57. Soviet tram drivers and mechanics regarded the LM-49 as an extremely durable and reliable tram. Its withdrawal from service was due to central government pressure to modernize the Soviet tram fleet, rather than risking breakdowns of the aging vehicles. Many LM-49 trams remained functional even after being officially decommissioned.
